There is an ongoing PBS TV series (also several books plus a website) called “Closer To Truth”. It is hosted by neuroscientist Robert Lawrence Kuhn. He’s featured in one-on-one interviews and panel discussions using the cream from the cream of today’s cosmologists, physicists, philosophers, theologians, psychologists, etc. on all in the Big Questions surrounding a trilogy of broad topics – Cosmos; Consciousness; God. The trilogy collectively taken care of reality, space and time, mind and consciousness, aliens, theology as well as on and so on and also on. Here are a few of my comments on one in the general topics covered – Is time travel possible?
# Is time travel possible? Actually I personally don’t think time exists. Change exists, and time is definitely our measurement of rate of change. IMHO time is definitely a concept. Time is really a mental construct that assists us fully understand change. Some cosmologists state that time appeared at the Big Bang, like time were anything with substance and structure, but I challenge these to actually create time in front of their peers as well as a TV audience or perhaps produce a theoretical equation or two that could create time. In the meantime, this is the trilogy of points.
First, the very idea of time travel is just one of those fun aspects of physics. Whether true or otherwise, it can be entertaining to experience the ‘what if’ game. If nothing else, the style makes or forces anyone to think around the nature of reality.
Secondly, Einstein among others have postulated that period travel is really a theoretical reality and I’m not into their sort of league that I can dispute the theories. I’ll leave that to other people who know the field inside and outside.
But thirdly, and even more importantly, you can’t ever actually be in the foreseeable future or days gone by, only later on or the past in comparison to where and when once you are. In short, regardless how you slice and dice things, you happens to the where-ever plus in the whenever because where-ever’s or whenever’s NOW maybe in other words in this. You cannot literally have any future or perhaps in any past because you only feel the NOW and that is the present. If you should somehow travel back 60 minutes, you should still experience things as owned by NOW. If you sleep for 1 hour then arise, you are sometime soon relative to after you went to sleep, however, you still discover youself to be in the NOW.
# Is time travel possible? The answer is both maybe or maybe not. Yes, we can easily travel into the near future at one second per second, we all do that anyway whether we like it or otherwise not. Yes we can easily travel into the long run at a slightly quicker rate when you go to sleep or elsewhere having our a feeling of consciousness, our understanding rate of change (that’s what time happens to be or measures) incapacitated. You get drunk and distribute and the next thing you realize you are 12 hours into the longer term. Yes you can travel into the longer term as outlined by Einstein’s twin ‘paradox’ where one twin travels for a very high rate of speed outward bound, stops and returns to home base, whilst the stay at home twin, well, stays home. Upon their reunion the travelling twin finds their work from home twin being far older, therefore the travelling twin has travelled into the longer term more rapidly than would otherwise happen to be the case. Yes, you may travel back in history, on paper, in accordance with the apparent theoretical properties that wormholes or black holes will surely have. No, it is possible to’t visit the past due to all of those nasty paradoxes. I like the variation about the grandfather paradox whereby you travel back just 1 hour into the last and shoot yourself dead. That’s a novel means of committing suicide! The other paradox I like is if you go back in its history to have Shakespeare autograph your copy of “Hamlet”. Shakespeare isn’t home nevertheless the maid promises to get him autograph your book when he returns. Alas, your timing is slightly off and Shakespeare hasn’t yet written “Hamlet”, then when he receives your copy from his maid to autograph, he reads it, and once you return to Shakespeare’s home and receive back your now autographed copy and return home for a own time, Shakespeare now writes “Hamlet”. The paradox is, where did “Hamlet” originated from since Shakespeare only wrote it after he’d already seen your copy. No, it is possible to’t travel back to the last because if which were possible there would be hoards of your energy-travelling tourists who went back in its history to witness some important historical event or another. No hoards of photo-snapping tourists have have you been documented being present at Custer’s Last Stand, the Battle in the Alamo, the sinking of RMS Titanic, or any one thousands of similar historical events. Yes, you’ll be able to travel back in its history but only in to a parallel universe. If you shoot yourself but it truly is another you in another universe, no paradox arises. You travel back in history to have Shakespeare autograph your copy of “Hamlet” but for the reason that parallel universe Shakespeare can write “Hamlet” dependant on your copy no paradox results. However, the main one point I find interesting is when you end up in the foreseeable future, or even in the past, will you be really later on or yesteryear? No, the only real time you can happen in is the existing, your the following and NOW time. It might be an alternative time from that which you previously knew, but nevertheless wherever and whenever you exist, you only take place in the NOW.
# Is time travel possible? It could already be the case this time travel may be documented with the quantum level although that is certainly open to interpretation. Before I get towards the specifics, I just must point out by using respect to your laws, principles and relationships of physics, time is invariant. Operations in physics remain invariant soon enough whether time is moving even as we normally perceive it (past to future) or returning to front (future to past). For example, gravity would operate much like its normal grab-ity self within a world where time flowed backwards. There’s many an action one could film that whenever the film were run backwards, one would not be any the wiser. Tree branches blowing inside wind one thinks of, or coming together, collision, and rebounding or separation of two billiard balls. Okay, having established any time it comes to physics, physics doesn’t care which direction time is flowing, gone will be the violations in those laws, principles and relationships of physics future to past, supermarket come to your delayed double slit experiment.
In the regular double slit experiment, you would like to electron gun that fires one electron particle with a time, to ensure that one electron completes its journey prior to next an example may be fired, at two side-by-side slits. If one or perhaps the other slit is open, normally the one-at-a-time electrons move across the open slit to some detector screen behind the slits. The detector screen gets hit in nearly a similar spot each time after each electron particle passes from the single open slit. That is hassle-free. If both slits are open, the electron shape-shifts to a wave (how I are not aware of), passes through both slits (as a wave can), morphs back in to a particle and hits the detector screen. The difference is the fact after enough electrons have already been fired, and possess passed or waved over the double slits, the hits about the detector screen usually are not in just one single or two spots but all-over-the-map, albeit all-over-the-map in the classic wave interference pattern. Okay, that is the classic experiment.
Now we all do a variation about the theme, the delayed double slit experiment. Electrons are fired one-at-a-time, with both slits open up. An all-over-the-map classic wave interference pattern should appear about the normal detector screen after enough electrons happen to be fired. However, in addition for the normal detection screen, the two main other detectors positioned behind the regular detector screen which might be each in the exact line-of-sight with each with the two slits. The electron is fired. It morphs in to a wave and passes through both slits then morphs back in to a particle. But prior to a electron, that’s already passed through both slits, can hit the detector screen, the detector screen is slowly removed to reveal behind it another two line-of-sight detectors. Now presumably as soon as the electron has transpired though the double slits it’s weak hands too late to vary its mind about where it will hit. Only a tiny few must be detected because of the two line-of-sight detectors aligned together with the two slits. Alas, every electron is going to be detected by one or perhaps the other from the line-of-sight detectors. It would appear the electron CAN change its mind after it’s got already experienced both slits and instead appear to get gone through one and the other in the two slits. One interpretation is the fact that the electron, after having passed through both slits, realised the gig was up, travelled back in its history, retraced its path and passed through one or even the other slit.
As an aside, the late Nobel Laureate Richard Feynman noted which the double slit experiment traveled to the heart of quantum weirdness. I mention this given it was precisely the same Richard Feynman who suggested that the positron (an anti-electron) only agreed to be an ordinary electron that has been going backwards over time.
# Is time travel possible? I have a number of other points to create about the very idea of time travel.
Firstly, there’s Stephen Hawking’s concept of a Chronology Protection Conjecture which postulates that there exists some up to now undiscovered law of physics which prevents time go to the past thereby makes the cosmos a good place for historians to strut their stuff.
Secondly, it has become said you cannot travel farther back in history than the date your time and energy travel ‘device’ was constructed, it could be a wormhole or some other gizmo. So if some genius builds an occasion travelling ‘device’ in 2014, he is not going anywhere in the past. But in 2015 they can travel back in 2014 plus in 2114 he could travel returning to any time between 2114 and 2014. The analogy is always that you cannot cross a tunnel prior to when that tunnel was built. Thus, for no reason see human time travelers because no human time travelling ‘device’ has yet been constructed. The flaw there is the fact doesn’t prohibit ET from visiting who will often have constructed a period travelling ‘device’ an incredible number of years ago. Recall those pesky UFOs though it doesn’t seem to cluster around significant terrestrial historical events so maybe ET doesn’t value our background and are just here on a break from their future.
Thirdly, presumably your time and efforts travelling ‘device’ is fixed at some type of celestial coordinates. Because everything within the cosmos was in motion, after you re-emerge into that cosmos after starting on a period of time travelling journey, whilst you may be at those self same fixed celestial coordinates the rest in the cosmos might have moved to differing celestial coordinates. So, when you start out in London you may not end up in London on down, or up, some time travelling track. Finally, the very idea of your, or future or in the past or perhaps your past is only in accordance with what you choose as some fixed point. If you pick your age as that fixed point, then clearly you’re now in the foreseeable future relative for your date of birth. If you pick the idea of an ever ongoing NOW, the actual, to be a fixed point, you might be neither later on or the past compared to the NOW nor are you going to ever be. That of course doesn’t mean you’ll be able to’t recall your past, what existed before your NOW (although the last in general is a lot more abstract) or policy for your future after your NOW (although the long run in general is beyond the control).
# Is time travel possible? There’s an additional form of your time travel, at least the illusion of your energy travel, that is certainly via the cinema. Films and TV shows involving time travel a wide range of and often legendary. But that’s just about the medium I wish to explore here. One can program time travel in to a computer simulation. You might have a game where the characters travel backwards (or forwards) with time, or use a software program that loops around returning to the beginning. Now the real question is, might we be characters or virtual beings in a very Simulated (Virtual Reality) Universe? If so, it programs that run our virtual show might accommodate time travel, or virtual time travel, though time travel that might appear to us for being quite real. Now where does our a sense deja vu really result from?
# Is time travel possible? There is one other kind of pseudo ‘time travel’ towards the near future that can be debunked. Presumably the one way you’ll be able to know what the long term brings, without advantage of any theoretical ‘device’ which could propel you there with a greater rate of knots than at one second per second, is usually to stay alive. Once you kick-the-bucket there it is. Your second per second journey towards the near future is over. It’s a pity that that worthless stock you own just goes wrong with sky-rocket to fantastic values in just a week of your respective demise, or even you’d appreciate to know if ET exists nevertheless the discovery happens a few days far too late as far as that you are concerned. Of course some might claim an afterlife will allow to keep up thus far with future happenings from that heavenly vantage point high up inside the sky, but besides that, you will discover those who claim to get led past lives or existed in past incarnations. Thus, you’ll be able to still continue your vacation to discover what the near future holds by doing it to another body via being conceived again (and over and over). There’s one huge problem but ‘remembering’ alleged past lives. Your mother’s egg cell cannot remember your past lives. Your father’s sperm cell cannot possess recollection of one’s past lives. Therefore, the you that comes to secure at conception cannot hold any memory of past lives. So, where did your memory of past lives are derived from? Might I suggest it was internally generated outside of wishful thinking, that the belief that you just existed inside the past will offer rise to your belief which you will exist again later on, and as being a pseudo way of afterlife and like a pseudo type of ‘time travel’ that provides you comfort. Anyway, that concept is often a really far out methodology of ‘time travel’ but one that is dismissed inspite of the many people who seemingly believe they indeed have ‘time travelled’ towards their endless future via using this method.
